Jack L Elliott 82nd Airborne 325th GIR
Jack Elliott enlisted into the army in 1942, he was a member of the 82nd Airborne all the way through the war until 1945.
He was involved in every major operation of WW2, starting in Italy and Sicily then onto the invasion of Fortress Europe in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany.
He flew into Normandy aboard a glider on the early hours of June 7th with the 325th GIR.
The 325th where involved with operations in and around the La Fiere causeway.
Jack was injured on the 9th June 1944, amongst heavy fighting for the La Fiere crossing. For this he received his Purple Heart medal.
He was evacuated back to a hospital in the UK and he did not re- join his unit until the 20th August, just in time to take part in the airborne invasion of Holland.
He once again took to the skies in a Waco Glider.
Although not connected to the Normandy invasion, included is his letter he wrote on VE day, which he talks very frankly about the liberation of the Wobblin concentration camp.
