Lt John W Landis made his first 30hr round trip to Omaha beach on D+2 to check on the progress of Operation Mulberry. He transferred full time to Omaha on D+12 and arrived at Omaha amongst the worst storms the region had experienced in recent years. The tug Landis travelled over on was unable to dock and they spend 2 days circling Omaha towing their Phoenix unit behind them. Lt Landis landed on Omaha aboard a CB’s DUKW, he landed with only the clothes he was dressed in, no gasmask and no helmet. This would explain his almost new re-issued M-1 helmet. The interesting thing about the helmet is the white painted liner has been used more than the shell. The liner has marks from where the chin strap has been wrapped round it. This would suggest that he used the liner alone without the helmet. A similar helmet liner can be seen in one of his photo’s aboard the harbour itself. Please see J W Landis’s other pages with photos from his album, Top Secret paperwork and a German pick up helmet.
