Omaha Marked Ammo Crates
Here we have a collection of painted wooden ammunition crates.
They have all been stencilled with a coding that would have denoted its port of destination.
All the boxes are marked with Omaha, one with CWS and all have coding using letters and numbers. Omaha would designate the landing beach and we know that CWS stands for chemical warfare service.
Special coding was used on a lot of equipment during the invasion and very little is known about its meaning.
Marked crates like these are very rare, other examples bearing Utah and even Gold markings have been known of, but are even rarer than Omaha marked crates.
