John Casil 1st Division 18th Infantry Battlion
John Casil was from Chemung County New York and enlisted into the army in December 1939.
He served all the way through WW2 with the 1st Infantry Division 18thRCT.
The 18th were due to start landing at 9:30 on Easy Red, but due to the congestion off the coast they arrived 30 minutes late.
The 18th sustained fairly light casualties compared to other units on Omaha.
There was a lot of confusion with units landing on the wrong parts of the beach, which delayed the landings of the correct units. By early afternoon on D-Day all of the 18th RCT had landed.
With the help of Naval and armored fire support, the 18th defeated the last German stronghold at the entrance to the E-1 draw. They then fought up the draw towards St Laurent sur-Mer encountering minefields and enemy positions.
The grouping consists of John Casil’s Ike jacket with all its insignia and all of his medals, which 3 of medals are original engraved examples.
